Another found-footage film that dragged for me. One standout/disturbing visual (when the guy on EVA says something got inside his suit) but otherwise hard to take seriously.

Silly, gory fun. My favorite lines: “Are you okay?” and “Look at him. He’s walkin’ it off.”

A paper-thin plot that moves slowly (or should I use the more neutral “deliberately”), but is carried by the characters. The script makes even the 3 drug smugglers interesting. Funny dialogue and a nuanced performance by Brendan Gleeson. Watch this for the acting and the rapport between the actors.

A movie with a split personality. The first half is a relationship film (with “Flowers for Algernon”/Charley overtones) and the second is SF action-thriller. I thought the dichotomy was pretty brave. I found Caesar’s development fascinating. On the downside, the ape shelter seemed to release a hell of a lot more primates than physically possible – a sort of clown-car effect. Another was something only a geek like me would know: Apes will never speak any human language. A hyoid bone is required, and they ain’t got one. (I learned this researching SIMS.) Worth a watch.

I wanted to like this, I really did. And I gave it lots of time through the lingering slow takes and minimalist / non-existent dialogue (all fine with me). But the driver was simply too distant. Since he’s in virtually every scene, we need to engage with this guy if the film’s to work. I couldn’t, so it didn’t. He’s pretty savvy throughout most of the film, and very stupid at the end.

Biographically dubious (though it’s nice to see that someone remembers George Melies) but a gorgeous piece of film making. I’m a sucker for these kinds of sets and weird characters. Had a Gilliam feel about it, but with a coherent storyline.

Almost as bad as Peckinpah’s The Killer Elite (a completely different story, btw). One improbable scenario after another. The talented cast seemed as confused as I was and never gelled. Supposedly based on a true story but it’s hard to invest in a plot where so many supposedly smart people do so many dumb things. I couldn’t wait for it to be over.

This French film – which I suppose you could describe as boardroom noir – was totally engaging. Interesting characters well played, nicely twisted plot. The version I saw was undubbed, so subtitles were necessary (I happen to love subtitles). Definitely worth your time.

I really liked this. I had low expectations and was pleasantly surprised because I didn’t know where it was going. I dug the early 60s look and loved the final coin trick – an elegant execution.

Boy, if this doesn’t make you a compulsive handwasher, nothing will. I was already the guy who uses a paper towel to open the men’s room exit door. Now I want one for the front door of the restaurant… and the silverware… and don’t even mention the wine glass. A truly disturbing film. Its scenario could be playing out right now… a few feet away. See it.
