UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION
Silly, convoluted storyline, some good set pieces, decent effects, and Kate Beckinsale. My kind of movie.

THE HILLS HAVE EYES
A gorefest, but not as depraved or sadistic as other recent releases in the genre. Its echoes of Straw Dogs and some genuine heroics save it from the trash heap with Hostel and The Devil’s Disciples. Still, hard to watch.

CALIGULA
I’d heard people call this 1980 job pornographic, but really, with John Gielgud, Peter O’Toole, Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren, how pornographic could it be? Well, very. By the end it’s outright porny porn. Even so, virtually unwatchable, except for laughs. Might work for a bad-movie night—just make sure there’s lots of beer.

ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL
I liked the first 3/4 quite a bit, liked what its had to say about the phoniness and pretentiousness of the art world, where incoherence and just plain weirdness are consistently mistaken for profundity, but I felt it took a too-obvious way out at the end.

BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS
I’d heard this 1970 film (penned by Roger Ebert) was so bad it was good. Uh-uh. It’s so bad it’s unwatchable. Silly story padded with bad singing, awful acting, all to the refrains of an unlistenable score. AAAAAAARGH!

MONSTER HOUSE
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I will watch it many times before I die.

SLITHER
A film with serious horror that doesn’t take itself seriously. Some icky, funny stuff. Favorite line: “I think there’s something wrong with me.” (Ya think?)

SCARY MOVIE 4
I laughed only once in this entire flick – and I can’t remember why. Terrible.

FINAL DESTINATION 3
Some neat Rube-Goldberg-ish deaths with not much of interest between. A lot of the “between” stuff seems like a blur. Hmmm. I wonder why?
